Teleradiology has established itself as a professional service that supports medical institutions in their daily tasks. And now the next innovation in medical diagnostics comes into play with Artificial Intelligence (AI). Read part 2 of our report here!
AI applications undergo a whole series of tests before they are ready for the market, which are essential for approval by the international regulatory authorities, such as the FDA in North America and CE in Europe. This creates the basis for AI results to be characterised by high sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. This means that the result for a characteristic that the AI used is looking for will contain the highest possible number of true positive results and at the same time only a negligible number of false positive and false negative results.
The prioritisation of investigations
We at ERS – Emergency Radiology Schueller work together with major AI developers. We help to produce such AI which enables patients to be prioritised according to the degree of injury and illness. The AI can thus help to triage in order to first produce those findings that are most urgently needed by our clinical partners in hospitals and institutes in Switzerland, Germany and Austria for patient treatment. However, our teleradiology at ERS – Emergency Radiology Schueller offers advantages far beyond this: A very important aspect for us is climate protection. Nowadays there is a lot of discussion about how to save emissions and thus slow down climate change. Apart from industry, the transport sector accounts for a large proportion of emissions. Teleradiology can make a considerable contribution here. Even with our current products, the On Call Service for acute radiological use and the Elelective Service of our Academic Health Division, patients who are examined at our radiological partner institutes close to their homes only have to travel very short distances to their treatment. This is because the radiological examinations that are essential for therapy are assessed online by our specialist physicians in remote locations. The elimination of long journeys saves considerable cumulative CO2 emissions. Accordingly, we generate even greater effects, since our teleradiology is already used across national borders: Even long-distance and air travel by patients can be completely eliminated. Our technology makes no difference whether doctors and patients are in neighboring towns or several thousand kilometers apart. In addition, our medical personnel no longer have to travel to and from work: It is a specific feature of radiology in our neighboring country of Austria, for example, that radiologists report radiological examinations as independent substitute physicians after work as an employed physician in a hospital in the afternoon and evening or on days off in radiological institutes. This means that it is at least to some extent possible to provide the population with comprehensive care. But with the use of teleradiology, these medical official channels are no longer necessary, and the lower CO2 emissions also help to relieve the climate.
We are aware that the teleradiological services of ERS – Emergency Radiology Schueller are part of the trend towards the general digitalisation of processes and services. Not only do we protect the climate, but with our first-class radiological reports we also provide substantial support for society – the starting signal for the individualized therapy of every single person. Diagnostic Gate can be quickly and easily integrated into the PACS/RIS/KIS landscape of our customers. This small hardware system is connected to the existing infrastructure via HL7 and DICOM. Diagnostic Gate transmits the patient data via VPN/IPsec directly and is highly encrypted to our ERS/XCOORP data centres.
With this in-house development and the use of state-of-the-art technologies, we can now offer the connection to our teleradiology network free of charge for all customers – whether individual practices, institutes, or hospital holding companies. This means that from now on you only pay “pay-per-use”, i.e. only our reporting of your studies!
